Syracuse, Ind., officials hope industrial growth and new jobs will result by extending utility lines to recreational vehicle builder Ameri-Camp LLC, according to a report in the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette.
During a special town council meeting Tuesday (Aug. 1), the Syracuse Town Council will hear a proposal from the Elkhart County Redevelopment Commission on creating a tax increment finance, or TIF, district for Ameri-Camp, Syracuse Town Manager Jeff Noffsinger said.
Ameri-Camp plans a $7.1 million expansion to its facility and wants to hook into Syracuse’s sewer and water utilities, Noffsinger said. If a tax increment finance district is established, it will allow Elkhart County to take the tax money Ameri-Camp pays and use it to pay the bond Syracuse will obtain for the utility extension.
Ameri-Camp was acquired in late April 2005 by a company headed by Fred Hassan, owner of Florida-based SunCoast RV which operates 16 stores primarily in the southeast.
Although Ameri-Camp has a Syracuse address, it is outside the Syracuse town limit in Elkhart County.
Ameri-Camp officials have said the company will add about 175 jobs in 2006-07. Most will be manufacturing positions but there will also be some management and engineering jobs, as well. In 2008, Ameri-Camp expects to add about 75 jobs.
A tax increment finance district allows communities to capture tax revenue generated in a designated area and use that money for road, sewer and other infrastructure improvements.
In this case, it would allow Syracuse to sell bonds to finance the utility extension and pay the money back with future tax revenue from the area.
Noffsinger said town officials are hopeful even more jobs could be created after the town buys a 60-acre tract near Ameri-Camp to develop into an industrial park.

(June 7, 2006) announces the additions of Glen Anderson, Tim Concannon and Tony James to their sales organization.
Glen Anderson, Southwest Regional Sales Manager, will be responsible for the territory which stretches from Louisiana to Southern California and includes the states of Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Arizona and Nevada. His twenty plus years of experience includes management positions with National RV, Damon Corporation and Mallard Coach Company.
Tim Concannon will be responsible for the Mid-West Region which includes the states of Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri. Concannon was most recently with Gulf Stream and is an industry expert in developing and marketing light weight coaches.
Tony James, Dealer Consulting Manger, will be responsible for the states of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas and Arkansas and be an internal resource to both the sales team and dealers. Tony’s experience includes a management position with Adventure Manufacturing and being a Standards Inspector for RVIA.

Ameri-Camp Embraces Interactive Kiosks, Presents to Dealers
Syracuse, Ind. – RV manufacturer Ameri-Camp is beginning to use interactive kiosks to showcase their RV product lines
The Syracuse, Indiana company is employing the interactive information centers for use in dealer shows, meetings, RV sales centers and even inside the RV units.
Ameri-Camp worked with Video and Sound Productions to create, develop, and produce interactive marketing, videos, CD-ROM's, and the information centers as part of Ameri-Camp's aggressive marketing strategy.
Ameri-Camp also introduced the information center at its recent dealer meeting and the concept received an enthusiastic response.
"Customer trends are adopting this technology and it's important we give them the latest tools to help in their decisions," says Dave Raphael, Ameri-Camp Marketing Director. "These interactive information centers are able to deliver information to customers in a fun, effective and affordable way."
The self-contained interactive kiosk features product videos and information, floorplans, picture galleries, page turning brochures and information on the Ameri-Camp company – all accessible from a touchscreen.
